Maiden
Tracy Edwards, the first all-female Whitbread crew, and the 1989 race that broke the rules of the sport.
In 1989, 24-year-old Tracy Edwards skippered the first all-female crew ever to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race, aboard Maiden - a tired second-hand yacht she mortgaged her house to buy and the crew rebuilt with their own hands. They won two legs in class. Edwards became the first woman ever named Yachtsman of the Year.
A film about how to lead when the institution refuses to take you seriously, and how to keep leading when the institution finally does.
The sailing is real, the boat is real, the Southern Ocean footage was largely shot by the crew themselves, and the doubts on camera are real. Premiered at Toronto in 2018, released by Sony Pictures Classics.
Watch it the night before a delivery, then watch it again the night after. A documentary that earns the word masterclass.
