Morro Bay to Santa Barbara

Point Conception has a reputation, and it is earned. I waited out a run of wild storms in Morro Bay for a weather window, and the window that opened was the opposite problem: no wind at all. I rounded the infamous corner on a flat, oily sea with the sails slatting and the diesel doing all the work.

Then the petrol ran out. I spent a night drifting in the channel, waiting for something to fill the sails, the boat turning slow circles under the stars. Wind came up the next morning as it always does, and I ghosted into Santa Barbara to refuel, tie up, and enjoy the city for a day before the next leg.
